Reading Nagano Prefecture through the data
Certified public accountant / editor — reading the bigger picture by tying public data together.
The number of physicians ranks only 30th nationally. And yet life expectancy ranks 4th. Nagano is a prefecture that takes its rank not by the quantity of resources but by the quality of results.
A prefecture whose mountains squeezed its sheer volume chose a way of living that stands on precision instead of pushing with quantity. Longevity, and the precision of Suwa, both come from the same single thread. To that prefecture of “quality over quantity,” a transport of sheer volume—the maglev—is now coming for the first time. Only, the timetable is not yet set.
Past・How it got here
The mountains squeezed the volume and left precision
Zenkoji is a non-denominational temple with about 1,400 years of history; its main hall, from the mid-Edo period, is a National Treasure. It is the central tourist site of Nagano City and a historical resource that symbolizes the prefecture. Nagano is a mountainous prefecture in the center of Honshu, made up of multiple mountain ranges and basins. The prefectural capital is Nagano City. There is no sea, and flat land too is limited—this condition of “not being able to hold volume” became the starting point of the prefecture’s way of living.
A land that cannot push with quantity can only stand on quality. Precision machinery and electronics, centered on Suwa, are the answer. Miso, agar, and microscope-related products lead the nation in shipment value—each reaches the top not in “making in large quantities” but in “making finely and precisely.” High-altitude farm produce such as lettuce, apples, and enoki mushrooms, too, where the prefecture cannot win on lowland volume, broke through to the national top class on the quality difference of altitude and climate. Because the mountains squeezed the volume, precision remained as the prefecture’s way of living.
The chart below renders, as a single line, the longest story available on the numbers side. What this prefecture, its volume squeezed by the mountains, has built up over half a century is not lowland quantity but the precision of altitude and climate—that same way of doing things appears in the calm slope of the long-run trend. What I (Atlas) read is that the length of the line and the way of living that is “quality over quantity” are one thread born of the same land conditions. I treat the direction of the past and the direction at our feet separately, but that constitution of “producing good results from squeezed resources” is etched over the long run.
A land that cannot push with quantity had to stand on quality. The precision of Suwa, and longevity, are that same answer.
