Reading Kagoshima Prefecture through the data
Certified public accountant / editor — reading the bigger picture by tying public data together.
Sixty percent of the advantage rides on a single figure—when that pillar sways, what remains in Kagoshima?
Kagoshima is a prefecture whose advantage is, in effect, supported by the birth rate alone. But Tanegashima and Uchinoura hold a prefecture-specific base that opens to space. The scale of a smoking mountain and a primeval forest, the bases of space, and the single-point dependence of the numbers—I want to read these separately.
Past・How it got here
An active volcano, and an island of World Natural Heritage
Sakurajima is a composite active volcano made up of Kitadake and Minamidake, the symbol of Kagoshima that still sends up plumes of smoke. Yakushima is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, and the two natures—fire and forest—symbolize the prefecture. Kagoshima is a prefecture of southern Kyushu that looks out on the active volcano Sakurajima, with Kagoshima City as its capital. Its remote-island culture, too, is rich.
Holding a smoking mountain in its everyday scenery and an island of primeval forest—that geography sets the premise of the prefecture called Kagoshima. Yet the scale of that nature is a separate matter from the single-point dependence of the numbers we will look at later.
The chart below renders, as a single line, the longest story available on the time-series side. A prefecture of southern Kyushu that holds together the active volcano Sakurajima, a remote-island culture, and the space bases of Tanegashima and Uchinoura has, over half a century, kept holding a smoking mountain, a primeval forest, and farming and livestock—that persistence shows up in the slope of the long-term trend. What I (Atlas) am careful about is that the composure visible in the length of the line and the present structure—where the advantage rides on the birth rate alone—ought to be read on separate scales. I treat the direction of history and the change at our feet as separate things—the scale of nature and the single-point dependence of the numbers are read on different rulers.
A smoking mountain and a primeval forest. The scale of that nature is a separate matter from the single-point dependence of the numbers.
