Reading Miyagi Prefecture through the data
Certified public accountant / editor — reading the bigger picture by tying public data together.
The prefecture where the most people gather in Tohoku is also one of the hardest places in Tohoku to be born into. It is the same prefecture.
Miyagi’s contour is drawn by two points: a relatively high rate of population change, and a birth rate near the bottom in the country. Liveliness and its own dwindling coexist in the same prefecture—and at its center of gravity, on Mount Aoba, a research facility emitting light a billion times brighter than sunlight has begun to operate. Here lies the contradiction that the average conceals most skillfully.
Past・How it got here
From the Date castle town to the hub of Tohoku
The prefectural capital, Sendai, is the largest city in the Tohoku region. Starting from the castle town built by Date Masamune, the economic and administrative hub functions of Tohoku have, over time, concentrated here. When reading Miyagi, the first thing to keep in mind is this position as “the center of gravity of Tohoku.”
For all its being the center of gravity, the face of tourism is native food. Grilled Sendai beef tongue spread through postwar Sendai and has become a representative local dish, featured even on the city’s official tourism site. The functions of a hub city, and food with its feet on the ground. This combination is what makes Miyagi feel like Miyagi.
The chart below draws, as a single line, the longest story available on the numbers side. To read the accumulation that this “center of gravity”—the prefecture where the most people gather in Tohoku—has built up over half a century, you first need to let your eyes adjust to that length. In my view, what you must watch here is not to be dragged along by the length. The movement of people gathering in Sendai (internal inflow from across Tohoku) and the movement, in that same prefecture, of children not being born cannot be told apart on a single trend line. The long-run direction and the location of the contradiction must be read on separate scales—a greater contradiction awaits in the present section.
Miyagi is the center of gravity of Tohoku. But being the center of gravity and continuing to grow are two different things.
